Gentlemen:

What's the scope on the situation in Indonesia now in general and in Jakarta and Bali specifically?

Would you recommend a foreigner to travel to this country for leisure purposes only? Or is it better to "wait and see" what the next months will bring? I know that many moderate muslims want the foreigners to return to their country like it was before the attacks started last October but please be sure to describe the situation as realistic as possible.

I guess the Islamic fundamentalist terrorists are still out there and are waiting right now for a good opportunity to attack tourists again as they did with the bombings in hedonistic Kuta last year and the US-owned Marriott this year?

How's the mood toward foreigners in this country these days: Are people afraid to be together with them because they could be possible terrorist targets? Or are they welcome and the problem is just overstated in the Western media?

This is not really information, but more an advice.
In my opinion, there are two places you must avoid for the time being. First, the bars at jl Paletehan, near blok M busstation. As you may know, it is THE gathering place for the caucasians in Jakarta. Second, Lintas Melawai, the place that has been mentioned a lot in this forum, as the place where to find "companions".

Okay you horny bastards, this is agent Babihutan reporting from his post field experiences on the lady of Indonesia. I crossed the country from Banda Aceh in Sumatra to Merauke in Papua, and found the girls to be as exotic, diverse, and interesting as the country itself. First of all, for all you folk putting off your trip to Indoland after watching CNN of the Bali bombing, and war in Iraq, its time for a little reality check.

The day I entered the country in Sumatra back in March, the war in Iraq had just broken out, and me and my buddy were some of the only foreigners in sight, because the media scared everyone away. If anything, we were treated like royalty, cause the tourist business was collapsing. Second, in general, Indonesians are much more like other East Asian cultures about tolerance than some of the more strict Middle Eastern cultures. Its not over run with bule (foreigners), like Thailand for example, so there is a much more received welcome anywhere you go, and very decent hospitable people. even the most hardcore Muslims of Aceh welcome any tourist of any creed or faith, as long as you're not slammin their daughters. But in most places across the country, very pretty girls will be much more available to just about any westerner than lets say back in The States or Canada. And the best part is, everywhere you go, you get a different flavour. The country's made up of hundreds of ethnic groups.

All I can say is if you stay on the tourist trail, you will meet many beautiful girls who are looking for you, and when you go off the trail, you will be an object of wonder and fascination, and will wanna be examined by curious females. So its a no-lose situation. In general, they're not as materialistic as most other asian chicks (this varies of course), and can be more fun and down to earth, less business. But hey, if you're still too scared to go, thats fine, leaves less competition for me on my next trip :)

Scared of Indonesia

When I say I'm not in the least afraid of traveling to Indonesia, I'm not telling the whole truth. An earthquake is something I'm really apprehensive about.

A big earthquake is long overdue in Jakarta, and when one happens, it will kill hundreds of thousands. Needless to say, most buildings supposed to have been constructed to resist a major seismic event probably weren't.

Therefore I consider the seismic risk far greater than the risk of terrorism. Indonesia is a big enough place for dozens of bombs to go off without my being anywhere near where it happens. On the other hand, should Mother Earth decides to make her move while I'm there, I see the multi-storey hotel where I'll be staying coming down like a card castle.

I'm planning a trip next month to Surabaya, Bali & Manado. Does anyone have any mongering tips for me? Where to go, where to stay etc.

I'm especially interested in finding accomodation, hotels, apartments. Where you can get some privacy and where its not a problem to bring back any girls.

In Bali, try Swastika Hotel, ( its an Indo religious symbol, no Nazi connections like in South America). Its in Sanur, where the Barokek brothel is. Some other brothels are located there as well. Just ask your bartender, bellboy, or taxi driver, they will take care of you for a small referral fee, $10. The hotel is cheap, has decent food, and is very laid back. Location will save you the most travel time.
The traffic is so bad that it will take you 30 to 45 minutes if you stay anywhere else, to get to and back from where the girls are.

Rather than Barokek, try Diyan Ayu. Barrokah is about 10 years past it's prime and so are the women. Don't tell them or your cabby that you've never been there. I no longer negotiate. I simply choose a girl, go to the room and hand them a 100,000 rup note (about $12 US) If they question it, I simply say 'suddha' (already) let them know you've been there and that's what you pay. It's only one word to learn. Your cabby is not your friend. He's on the take. Don't confuse friendliness with being your friend. The average wage is 20,000 -30,000 rups per day ($3. US), so for him to sell you out for 50 cents is a common practice. Their are many great places across the highway from Diyan Ayu. They're cheaper, but harder to find.

When in Surabaya "Dolly's" is an area which might resemble Thailand in that it's several city blocks with nothing but girls available.

If Dubai was a " hell" of a place, then Indonesia is " Heaven". Balikpapan has some great joints. Not like Dubai where you need to do things clandestinely. And if you get caught there you had it. You will find Indonesia far better than Dubai. Just enjoy yourself. Check into the hotel and visit the bars there and you will find out.

Filipinas, Malaysians, or Indonesians:

This question is for those rare people who know all three. I'm asking this question in the Malaysian and Phillippine sections too.

It seems that women from these look similar. Which do you prefer? I have been to the PI several times and understand Filipinas reasonably well. Indonesian girls are varied on their physical appearance due to their origin. Some of them are light skin (In Manado or in Boneo), some are dark skin (Papua or certain area of Java).

The condition on their sex performance are also differed from area to area. The girl from Manado are more open on the sex but gilrs from Aceh are more conservative. It is all depend on what you are looking for and what kind of girl you meet.

Many Philipine girls are more like Manado girls because of their geography similarity. The same thing with Malaysian girls. The Girls from Kuala Lumpur will be more open than their sister in Trengganu due to culture.

HarryDHo - I can assure you there is absolutely no contest: Indonesian girls are way out in from especially in respect of attitute. Appearance is subjective of course and because of the size of the country there is more variation within Indonesia than between the three countries. Also of course there are many Chinese girls and mixed race in Indonesia and Malaysia in particular.

Most of the Filipinas I met have excellent attitudes and so did the "one" Malaysian I met. Indo women have, hands down, better attutudes? That must be something special.

Thanks for the correction. My little notes of Bahasa Indonesia words are intended to be used as a "curse"in the Bahasa Indonesia language. I agree with you that some of those words would sound very very rude should they be expressed towards a girl that you are wooing. For easement sake, can we jointly explain several words in Bahasa Indonesia that would be usable in a wooing situation. Can anyone provide me with some info on airfares to and from HK and Jakarta? I will be in HK on Oct 5 and I want to monger in Jakarta for about 5 days if the airfares round trip is reasonable.

I checked Cathay Pacific, the airfares round trip from HK to Jakarta is close to $1,000 US. It will be too much for me.

Any suggestions? Someone suggests going to BBK first and go to Jakarta from there. Appreciate any ideas.

I think that you should consider connecting to JKT through Singapore. Return airfare between HK - SING shouldbe about US$400-US$500 at most. ValueAir has return tickets SING-JKT for US$85.

I spent 10 days in Yogya in September and found that Hugo's Café, mentioned elsewhere on this board, is definitely the place to go hunting. It is located about 8km out of town on the road to Solo, and after 10pm it starts getting packed with girls. The clever management hands out free membership cards to keep up the supply of eligible females. Another Hugo's operates in the city of Malang (near Mount Bromo), and new ones are opening up in Surabaya and Jakarta. A negative point of Yogya Hugo's is the deafening sound of the otherwise excellent band; I finally resorted to pencil and paper for conversation, which turned out to be great fun. We are expatriates living in Indonesia and how come we are not aware that 2 dozen foreigners have been killed here yesterday. Where have they died and who killed them. In fact when the Australian embassy was bombed, not a single foreigner or expatriate was harmed. It was the poor local and lovely citizens of Indonesia who were killed. Could you kindly enlighten us as to where the foreigners were killed. None of the papers or international news reports carry such stories here.

Let me assure you that Indonesia is much more safer than walking in New York or Chicago or London.

Don't worry!! Indonesia is safe country. You can walk anywhere without any worry. Just use your common sense. I have live in this country for a very long time and never have any problem due. Just cautius on small criminals like tieves or pick pocket.

I had some similar concerns about going to Indonesia. However, no problems at all, and even when I was in a fishbowl (Jakarta - No bule in sight for an hour), people were nice and I had no problems.

I'm also the adventerous type. I walked a couple of miles at night in what even *I* would say were not too nice neighborhoods. No problems.

I agree completely with JC and Hawaii, I feel that Indonesia is very safe for Americans and Bules in general.

The risks that you will face are of the general third world crime nature and have nothing to do with the fact that you are an American or the fact that you are probably not a Muslim.

As in most third world countries a little common sense will go along way towards keeping you out of harms way. The one item that would easily be overlooked by first time vistor would be the relative safety of the different taxi companies. I would recommend sticking to the Blue Bird group taxis after midnight whenenver possible. The company operates Blue Bird taxis and Silver Bird taxis.

The most amazing thing is that people keep asking how safe Jakarta is. Some times it sound ridiculous. Is it is extremely dangerous to walk in Chicago or even in New York. But Jakarta can never be unsafe. The kind oif respect and regard one gets here is just amazing and sometimes the kind of travel warnings that we get seems as if some lunatic has posted it. In fact last week I raised this issue withe British Consular General when we met up with him in an informal chat and he says we need to understand the diplomatic language. And in fact he conceded that Jakarta was 1000 times safer than walking the streets of London.

Absolutely agree, my home town, a non-descript small city in the UK, after 1am is a violent dangerous place where drunken youths do battle with each other and anyone else in the city centre. The hospital A&E departments most Friday and Staurday nights look like battle field casualty clearing stations and yet I never hear any Indonesian government travel advisories about the UK.

I have encountered nothing but courtesy and friendliness from everyone here in Jakarta. Even the rip off taxi men try to rip you off in as friendly a manner as possible. Indonesia is a very welcoming hospitable country, I know you're supposed to say that about every country, but I've been to Germany and France and I sure as hell wouldn't say it about those countries.

C'mon over it's great here, it's not called Asia's best kept secret for nothing you know.

Yes, we need visa to enter Indonesia. You can either get it at the Indonesian Embassy in Washington D.C. or, much easier, get one upon arriving in Indonesia. If I am not wrong, the Visa On Arrival is US$10,00 for a seven days stay or US$25,00 for a one month stay, both extendable upto 3 times. I guess I am right, as I never apply for a visa, having a work permit for Indonesia. Hope this may help your quary.

US citizens (among others) are required to have a visa for entry into Indonesia. You can obtain one on arrival - there are facilities available to obtain the required visa on arrival at the Jakarta airport (Soekarno-Hatta). The cost is US$10 for three days (including the date of arrival) and US$25 for 30 days - no other options. The process is simple and hassle free - I have about 20 - 3 day visas in my passport - never has taken longer than 10 minutes to obtain on arrival. Once you have the visa you can then proceed to the normal immigration counters for clearance into the country.

Just wanted to re-confirm the previous posts. I was in Jakarta recently for 9 days (see field report in the Jakarat section) and was able to get a visa right at the airport in Jakarta upon arrival for $25. Make sure you have U.S. dollars (exact change is easiest).

If you go to the Indonesian embassy in Washington DC, a visa will cost you $35, so you're better off to wait until you get to Jakarta.

"Countries Expected to be Added: Based on recommendations made to the Government by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the following 11 countries may be added to the list of nations able to arrange visas on arrival: The Netherlands, Sweden, Russian Federation, People's Republic of China, India, Spain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Egypt, Belgium, and Portugal"

As a citizen on one of the above countries, I eagerly await these new additions.

I also live in one of those countries you mentioned. But I think the best way to get a visa is not on arrival, but beforehand in your own country. Imagine, queing for ages (you must be familiar with the speed of things happening in Indonesian offices) after a flight of hours!

OK, if you live in a capital city or in a city where you can go to the consulate to arrange you visa and physically collect your passport later. But if, like me, you have so send you passport through the post, it's another matter. The risk of a passport getting lost is not zero. It's an uncertainty factor I could do without.

As to queuing for ages, I think it's not like that most of the time. I've travelled with someone from one of the VOA countries. He has been through customs nearly as quickly as I.

Visa Upon Arrival - speedy!
 

I have a U.S. passport. I've visited Indonesia twice during the last six months (last August, as referred to in my Dec. 24th post below, and this past month). In both cases, I purchased my visa upon arrival at the airport. Last August, there were two people in line ahead of me (but the line moved quickly), while this past month, there was no line at all.

Both times, I received the visa within 1 minute of being waited on - the passport official entered the information into the computer, then the visa was printed out on the spot. I was pleasantly surprised at the speed of the process!

The only potential downside to this is that the visa is only good for 30 days. Since my next visit to Indonesia in July is scheduled to last 35 days, I'll be getting my visa for that trip at the Indonesian consulate in the US ahead of time.

I hold two passports, British and Irish, the UK is a VoA country so it's no problem but the Irish aren't eligible (something to do with Irish support for the East Timorese I think) so I had to get the visa for it in Bangkok, it took a couple of days but was valid for 60 days. My girlfriend has a good friend who used to work for the Indonesian immigration department and he has arranged to get a year long visa for me. This allows me to stay for 60 days at a time without having a new visa stuck in every time I travel thus saving me space in my passport (as well as giving me an excuse to visit Thailand every two months). I suggest getting one of these if you can.

For a variety of reasons when I came back into Indonesia the last time I decided to use my UK passport, I got the visa stuck in my passport ok but when I presented myself at the immigration desk the official wanted to see my return ticket back out of the country which I didn't have and which was required for a VoA. The guy looked at me, glanced over at his colleague sitting beside him who gave a little nod, and asked me what I was going to do. Well what could I do? Fly back to Singapore to get a return ticket? He just looked at me and mumbled something I didn't quite make out, he then said 'do you understand what I mean?', 'Oh', I said 'I understand' and I slipped my hand into my back pocket where I had some US dollars, I discreetly palmed a $20 bill to him and he stamped my passport. As he handed it to me he smiled politely and said 'Sorry about that problem sir', 'Not at all officer, you're only doing your job' I replied,' 'Ok have a nice day' 'You too' as we went about our business, ah, bribery and corruption it's just the ticket!

I wish the Indonesian govt. would just go back to the way it was two years ago, and instead of using up a page and a half in visas they would just have an in and out stamp like Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia.

I wouldn't be surprised if you could "buy" your way in without any visa. However, I would advise against doing that because you don't know what will happen when you leave the country. The risk then is not only getting sent back on the same flight, which is bad enough, but getting arrested. The cops know the stakes are higher and they would then try to exact a much higher bribe. It's a warning I remember reading about in one of the (otherwise useless) Lonely Planet guides: never boast of getting into a country without the required visa because it's getting out that difficult, not getting in!

By the way, upon arrival in Jakarta airport did you notice one room to the right side of the checkpoints where a few cops always seem to be chatting and idling around? Well, long ago before the introduction of visas, the room what pointed to me by an English expat. If you didn't feel like queuing like the rest of the passengers, he said, you just went in there, threw in banknote and they would stamp your passport and wave you through at once. Apparently, that's what the idle policemen were there for.

I also resent having to procure a visa, not only because it uses up passport pages but because of the paperwork, the waste of time and the non-zero probability of a cock-up by consulate staff. If only Indo consulates would provide for multiple entry visas: you could then pay double (or triple) the fee and get a credit of so many days to be used up within the next three months or so. They have multiple entry visas, but only for special purposes and they take ages to get because they require authorisation from Jakarta!

XXL, good story. I have often found myself landing at DPS, at the same time as 3 other int'l flights have landed, and the arrival hall is packed. I normally get a 6 months multiple entry business visa, which costs 75 US$, and it takes about 1 week from the time I send it off, to the time I get it back. It does take up an entire page in the passport, but then everyone knows that the smaller the country's economy, and power on the world stage, the more officious everything looks. My 10 year passport lasts me about 3 years, due to all these annoying official looking visas.

Anyway, upon landing, I typically walk over to the area marked "airline crew", hand over my passport with a 50K bill placed directly on top, and am out into the steamy heat within 15 minutes of the wheels having touched the ground. I used to stand in line for up to 1 1/2 hours in the past, but I would rather spend the 50K, and be fucking my girl, within 40 minutes of landing:)

Depending on your passport, if you do not obtain a visa ahead of time, and you do not come from one of the "visa upon arrival" countries, you may find it difficult or even impossible to fly to Jakarta.

I know of a recent case where a woman with a passport from a black African country (who lives in the USA and has a green card) first travelled to Hong Kong with no problem (didn't need a visa for Hong Kong as she comes from a Commonwealth nation). Then she went to the Hong Kong airport on a Saturday morning to fly on Cathay Pacific to Jakarta; she did not have a visa for Indonesia, as she assumed that her green card would qualify her for the "visa upon arrival" service, especially if she paid an extra cash "fee" at the Jakarta airport.

However, Cathay Pacific refused to let her on their flight. She was told to go to the Indonesian consulate in downtown Hong Kong (near Wanchai) on the following Monday and get a visa first, then Cathay Pacific would let her fly with them. Which she did, but it delayed her travel plans by a few days.

I agree with xxl that the whole process of obtaining visas is ridiculous and often a joke.

The 14 countries are: Austria, Belgium, India, Ireland, Kuwait, Luxembourg, Maldives, Egypt, Portugal, Qatar, China, Russia, Saudi Arabia and Spain. While the cost of visa remains at US$10 and US$25, the validity is now seven and 30 days."

Needless to say, it remains a good idea to call the local indo consulate to confirm.

Visa on arrival revision for 7 days = $10, versus only 3 days for $10 is indeed a welcome change. I rarely stay more then 7 days, but always more then 3, so it saves me a bit of cash.

However, for many countries, the visa on arrival program was only instituted last year, whereas before you didnt even need one. So essentially, no matter how quickly you get off the plane, you will wind up at the back of the immigration queue because of the extra extortion step.

There is nothing on Lombok which you cannot find on Bali. The island is muslim, which Bali is not. Very quiet in evenings. No fresch milk - only canned milk. Beaches end very abruptly in the water so be careful not to drown!

At least the extension up to 7 days for 10USD is true since I've got that visa last weekend.

Anyway, what disturbs me more about it since implementation is the fact, that every time I enter Indonesia, a complete page of the passport is gone. 1.5 years and the pp is full with chops and visas nowadays and I have to get a new one.

Tip: If you want to save some space in the passport, ask the officer friendly to chop directly on the visa. Mostly they do it, so at least not too much used space.

Until 1999 the known prevalence of HIV in Indonesia was low, except for isolated geographic groups exposed to Thai fisherman. Since then, the prevalence among injection drug users in rehabilitation centers in Jakarta has risen rapidly to approximately 45-48%, according to surveys in 2001. By 2002 the prevalence had risen to 8-17% among female sex workers, 22% among transvestite sex workers, and 4% among other male sex workers. Condom use is low in all groups, and there is considerable sexual mixing between risk groups. Surveys suggest that an increasing proportion of adolescents use drugs and have had sexual intercourse. Thus, although the epidemic in Indonesia is currently in the World Health Organization-defined "concentrated stage," all the ingredients for rapid spread are present. Intensive effective intervention strategies--condom use and clean needle use promotions--need to be implemented, especially in the high-risk groups, if a more serious epidemic is to be averted.

If that's what your looking for you won't have to look to hard to find. Indo is a damn easy country to find working girls who will have BB sex (same with the philippines). As you can't walk past a good restaurant with excellent reviews every day without finally giving it a try, I am finally arranging a trip to Indonesia (more specifically : Jakarta) and will be landing in about 10 days to find out about the "best kept secret in SE-Asia", according to various sources, before retreating to more familiar digs in Cambodia.

I've been travelling to SEA (mostly Cambodia in the latest years) fairly frequently but this will be my very first trip to Indonesia. I have been reading the Indo forums, but would appreciate any advice about the best hotels for one week or so. Not necessarily luxurious but good value, quiet and of course good location.

Is 50-60$/night a realistic budget , or am I off target ? (I would usually pay around 1200 bath on sukhumvit in bangkok for a pretty large room in a business hotel with pool, nana area) In your experience are there good deals to be had if you walk in, or is more advisable to book in advance ? (From oct 27 or so)

Any other tip regarding venues/freelancer hangouts/things to watch out also appreciated, if only to corroborate existing info. If you're in the area and feel like some excellent Belgian ale in return for local expertise (I'll be travelling from Europe), I'd be glad to be of service. I'll also be glad to provide any update on Cambodia, should anyone be interested.

I'm afraid out of all 52 weeks a year, this is the worst one. Okay, in Jakarta is Hankypanky any time even in the month of Ramadhan. But it's not only Ramadhan, you run into the end of the holy month with 2 public holidays called Hari Raya Puasa. These 2 days are the most important Muslim holidays and many girls take nothing serious but this.

Better you go first to Cambodia and after 2 weeks there to Jakarta. Secondly, after having a great time in Jakarta you might be disappointed by Cambodia.

I'm not really worried about bombs, in fact it's probably the best time before regular tourists get back in herds.

I live in Malaysia, so KL is my regular hub. Either I travel Malaysian Airlines or Air Asia, don't know much about the Indonesian cheap carriers like Merpati or Lion. Except that one crashed in Medan recently.

For me I just simply made up the decision to avoid complete Indonesia during Ramadhan +- 1week. It's fun even in Ramadhan, but outside Ramadhan it's much more fun.
It's just a 2hrs flight, so remaining 11months per year is fine with me. But if you want to go at this time, I'd prefer Jakarta over SB or Bali.

There's such a place in JKT that is fairly central. Take a cab to "Jalan Blora". That's a small red-light district not far from Plaza Indonezia. Tell the taxi to drive to the end of Jalan Blora, then turn left, into a street I don't know the name of but it can't be missed because it makes a right angle with Jalan Blora (the straight-on direction and the to-the-right directions are dead ends).

Once you've turned left, drive straight on for about a mile or two with the railings on your right until you see lots of bajai's waiting by the street side. That's opposite where the action is, you have to walk twenty yards into the field.

In a spot, show these words to the driver once you are in Jalan Blora: "area prostitusi murah, di pinggir jalan, dekat kereta api".

You need to go after dark but I would advise to ask the cabbie to park and walk with you among the motley crowd you will find assembled there. Virtually none of the girl will have an ID, which may be a problem in case the police stops you on your way back to the hotel. You can also have the girls there and then, if you can stomach the lack of hygene. Usually, I don't mind a bit of sleaziness but that was too much for me. I had no sense of insecurity except on the fringe of the area where a few warias (transvestites/transexuals) turned up. Finally, if you bareback one of those girls, the odds are 100% in favour of your getting the claps.

There's more there than you can possibly cover in a month of holidays. I stayed for 5 nights and felt like I was so short of time - and it wasn't even a working trip!

Pretty much all hotels are girl friendly, being only speaking english is absolutely no problem. Some guys will tell you it helps, and im sure their right, however you wont have any problems securing a decent friend I am sure. Just check out previous posts, especially from some of our senior Jakarta members. there is more advice than you could use on you're trip I am sure. Have fun!

Indonesia outside of Jakarta and Bali?
 

A friend and I are thinking about a backpacking trip through Indonesia. We are, however, a little concerned that as Indonesia is an Islamic country (except for Bali, where we both have been before and therefore would not go), the action might be concentrated in Jakarta, but there might not be too much going on outside the capital. Could anyone comment?

P.S.: I realize that there is a lot of detailed info on specific places on the forum, but I could not find a general overview.

If you are backpacking, there should be little problem finding action in the whole of Java, except maybe in places plagued by foreign tourism like Jogyakarta.

There's more action in Java than on Bali anyway. I for one would never go to Bali for action and if you want to enjoy Bali, the best is to pick up a girl in Jakarta first and take her along with you to Bali.

Of course, speaking bahasa is even more useful outside Jakarta than in Jakarta but even without it you should have no problem scoring. I've often promised myself than I would one day wean myself from my Jakarta addiction and explore the unending possibilities of the Java kampungs but I've never made good on that promise, partly for want of someone with my own spending budget to accompany me. I'm past the backpacking age and lugging a suitcase on my own in Indonesian train carriages doesn't seem a good way to have fun.

Outside Jakarta it can be hard to find some action if you do not speak at least some bahasa(as xxl points out). It is there in most cities if you know where to look.. For girls I would not go to Bali, stop at Surabaya. I prefer Tretes (2 hours from Surababy), its cool has loads of girls to choose from and the price is "fixed" 200k for 3 hour.

I will be touring through Java again myself in agust, only I will drive my own car. No trains and busses for me anymore, but on the other hand it's quite an experience. The Islamic part, yes they are (too bad). If you go by car you are almost stopped in every kampung, they like to collect money in the middle of the streets, because the are (re)building their mosque. But most of them enjoy some action too...

The filming location was the Maharaja Hotel on jl tendean, acording to my sources at that time (could be wrong of course), the kids were from bandung university. It's true for most major Indo cities. Even in Yogya action can easily be found. Had my first indo shortime in Yogya back in 1992. The price at the time 15,000 IR. But that was a tourist price. Locals paid 10,000. Of course, prices will be different now. It was at the 'gang 1 / gang 2' complex close to Jalan Malioboro and the railway that intersects Yogya. Because backpacking concentrates mostly around budget travel areas, cheap hotels, etc. you'll always find some action.

The girls are still in jail. No progress getting them out. It seems they may actually be in there for 3 months.

Yes, most were bailed out (or should I say paid their bribe to get out) last Friday March 3rd, a few were kept over the weekend. Not sure if 100% got out as I heard a few of the less popular girls were having trouble coming up with the funds to pay their way out. Not sure if all the girls paid the same fee to get out but I do know that a friend of mine was hit up by one of his regulars for a charitable contribution to help her pay off the loan she took out with some friends to pay her way out. Needless to say his contribution was in excess of Rp5 million. Not sure if this gives him credit for the next 15 sessions.

Gene, it is easy for anyone with a US passport to obtain a "Visa Upon Arrival" at the airport for $25; it takes about 30 seconds to be issued (not counting the wait in line, which is usually brief) and is good for 30 days.

However, I've heard conflicting information as to whether or not it can be extended beyond the 30 days; I recently read in the Jakarta Post that it was not renewable but that the government is considering changing the current rules. Best bet is to call an Indonesian Embassy or Consulate ahead of time to get the correct information.

And I was sorry to read that the real Gene Pitney died over the weekend, as he comes from my home state of Connecticut. In addition to his own hits in the 1960s, many are not aware that Gene helped the Rolling Stones record their first record album, even playing piano on a couple of tracks.

Visa extensions are tricky. Sometimes there are rules and then there are rules that are meant to be broken. Recently I went to get a visa extention in Korea and the immigration lady said, 'how long do you want the ext for? ' Thinking I would be lucky to get thirty days, I asked for that. Her reply, "THAT's ALL? " Asked her how much she would give me. 'Whatever amount of time you want! " How about that for immigration hospitality? As I travel I find that my own country has the rudest immigration and customs officials that I come across.

Want to have a *lengthy stay in Indo (have lived in Thai and Korea) and have been reading the posts for long term visa info. But would appreciate it if anyone might put me onto a post that I have missed in the past.

I am looking for a place with swimmable sea, decent beaches, a fair girls/men ratio (freelancers preferred to brothels pros, but either will do) and varied nightlife at arms length.

To give an example, I would settle for something similar to Phuket.
Up to now my researches tell me that Bali might be what I’m after, but maybe Surabaya or other places could do as well.

Bali is the right place for you. Try to find accomodation around Kuta/Legian/Seminyak.

Kuta is a good place for you. Tell the taxi driver to drop you off at Paddy at Legian street. Look in Paddy's or in the disco/dancing just behind it (after 11 o'clock). If you don't have any luck there or if you find nothing of your choise or you are lazy (like me), go to Minibar at the opposite side of the street (after 9 o'clock).

I prefer Bali far above Surabaya in all aspects relevant to you. Never a dull moment in Bali.

RTFF! Since you only have two posts, I doubt if you'll get much info otherwise. The best way to get info is to give some first.

Also, do the obvious - go to a university campus, or a mall that's near a university campus, such as Plaza Semanggi.

Your best bet would be to read those reports that are referenced in the "Reports of Distinction" section, especially those reports written by Bulai69, the all-time master of mall pickups.

So put on your glasses and start reading!

Warning If You Are Flying Into The Usa
 

A warning to all flying into the USA. Even though this topic has been covered, and solutions have been discussed, I believe it bears repeating. I will be posting this in the Thailand and Indonesia forums, and if anybody feels like quoting it in another country they frequent, be my guest.
I landed at san Francisco International at 7.00 PM on a flight from Taipei. I had a lot of luggage, including some commercial samples, so I was expecting to go through secondary inspection. And sure enough I was. First question was where had I been. Answer: Thailand and Indonesia. Where in Thailand? Bangkok.
I am then asked to open my carry on luggage, and he pulls out my computer, my camera and a USB memory stick. He spent 20 minutes looking through my computer. I could tell he was looking at photographs, and then he looked through my camera and the USB stick. Not once did he give me any indication of what he was looking for.
After 20 minutes he let me go. I asked him what he had been looking for, and he just blew me off.
I am not one to take many pictures, for obvious reasons, I cannot have them in my computer. If I do take some naughty pics, I post them on ISG, and then delete them. I don’t know what the situation is if they the kind of pics we see every day on ISG is, but I don’t want to find out.
I am 99% sure he was looking for pedo photos. If that is all he was looking for, I am sure that most people are safe. However, I must say it was a very unpleasant experience.
The few times I have wanted to save photographs, and not want them seen on my computer, I have emailed them to a yahoo account nobody knows exists.
Again, I know this has been discussed before, just thought I would pass on an experience which happened to me less than 24 hours ago.

I did a language course in Jogjakarta. I found it great but I had been in country for about 6mths and allready had the basic skills (greetings, counting, directions etc.) Those that arrived with no experience left with only very basic understanding. Most courses were 2 or more weeks basically full time. A better option would be to do a few hours per week and put your learnings to use before the next lesson. I don't know if this is feasible for you.

There are several on line couses but you will find it a lot harder without being able to put the new information into daily use.

If you are only in country for short period(s) then grab a "long haired dictionary" and tell her only to speak to you in Bahasa. As I said the more practice you get the quicker you will learn.

Flying direct, you'll pay in the neighborhood of $200-$350. Check Garuda, Emirates, Kuwait Airways or Thai. If you don't mind a stop, check AirAsia, or a combination of Air Asia and AdamAir. Sometimes you can fly further (Bangkok-Bali, and then get a cheaper airfare to Jakarta). You'll still be looking at $120-$200 going this route.

It's been over 15 yrs ago but good school in Jkt in the Kuningan area (at least back then), related to Australian embassy. Can't think of the name but a google search should get it for you.

I was stationed for three years with family and my wife/I studied for 10 wks of basic spoken - i never did go consistently due to work and travel obligations but learned enough to get by. My wife of course became semi-fluent with addtional study and of course living there for three years.

Are you sure about that? I know that domestic flights are very, very cheap. But international flights? A return ticket to Jakarta from Amsterdam is cheaper than a return ticket to Amsterdam from Jakarta.

Buying international return tickets from Indonesia is generally expensive due to taxes. Jkt/Dxb/JKT is very expensive than Dxb/Jkt/DXb

Anyone having questions about cheap RTW fares can take a look at flyertalk.com. Some great threads there. Jakarta and Bangkok are among the cheapest. This is for Round The World fares and has nothing to do with point-to-point fares. There are a few places in the world where you can get them cheaper, but the amount is trivial, and besides, I will be in Jakarta so that is the place about which I need some information.

DO NOT buy your tickets in the US or Europe!! It's a lot cheaper to buy them in BKK (I assume you will be there). I paid 13,000 baht for a return flight on Thai (in the US, the same ticket was US$400!) in BKK from a travel agent on Soi 5 across from Gullivers. However, Air Asia is somewhat cheaper (they have a web site: http://www.airasia.com/site/en/home.jsp). There are a few travel agents in BKK that also sell Air Asia tickets (http://www.airasia.com/site/en/page...0travel%20agent). You can also try Garuda but I doubt they can beat either Thai or Air Asia.

I will be in Jakarta for the 1st 4 days of Ramadan this year, I'll be staying in the Blok M Area, will I be totally disappointed due to Ramadan or are there still plenty of pickings at the pubs and clubs around the Mall area?

The first day of fasting for Ramadan should be Sunday, September 24th, and the fasting will continue through October 23rd, then on October 24th there's a big feast day. Fasting is from sunrise to sunset, then the fasters wil break their fast with a small meal around 6:05 p.m., with a larger meal later in the evening.

Most MP places, especially the places in Kota, will be shut down completely for the month. Some girls take the opportunity to visit their home village (Indramayu, Semarang, etc.) during part of the month, while others will stay in Jakarta and will be more than happy to visit a guy at his hotel. Note that some (but not all) girls may be reluctant to pay a visit during the daylight hours.

You should be able to find some good choices after dark in the Blok M bars, also in the malls. And there should always be a few girls available - hey, they've got to earn money somehow. But things will definitely be quieter than normal, and the girls will be more discreet. Plus, there's a small but real possibility that a group of fundamentalists might attack a bar that's open during the evening, so keep an eye out wherever you are.

I stopped by Kartika last week for a session with my favorite lady, who assured me that she'd love to come to my hotel at any hour, day or night. Nice to know that I have at least one option to choose from!

Condoms is freely sold in Indonesia. Be it at pharmacy, dept. store, street stalls.

From beginning condoms are being sold as one of birth control tools. Recently condom producer also make inersting advertisements on TV, on how condom might save your life

Cost of condoms I think is around IDR 15K (less than USD 2) for pack of 3.

There are quite a lot of condom brands sold here (some are local brands) - but prominent brand like durex are readily available.

The educated part (mid class above) of male population mostly use condoms when they engage in commercial sex. Most female commercial sex workers from medium to high class insist on condoms for sexual intercourse, but not for BJ as majority of them will provide BBBJ.

This is less so in the lower part of society both male patron and female commercial sex workers.

Interstingly, for casual sex (non commercial) condoms sometime is not used. I once engage in a frank discussion with a lady friend, not a commercial sex worker, who says that she is a bit offended when her one night stand partner pull up a condom before sexual intercourse. She felt as if she is being looked upon as a commercial sex worker. At that time I told her that her partner is being careful for both himself and her. By using a condom, he protect her from possible disease he may carry (although more likely he tried to protect himself from possible unwanted pregnancy and disease, rather than thinking about his partner). I'm not sure if I get into her with that explanation.

On the male side, there is this huge believe that condoms prevent (or at least reduce) you from actually feeling the ultimate pleaseure from sex. Hence if they engange in a sexual intercourse in non commercial sex, they sometime do not use condoms.

I think I read somewhere in the newspaper that HIV cases related to drugs is raising more steeply than those from sex (both homo and heterosexual)

I don't have the stats number for all the above things, as I'm not a researcher, but this is the view I get from the street level.

Kudos to Remus for his excellent reply to Petemcc's post. Here are a few additional comments:

- if you are arriving in Jakarta on 18th October, you'll find things a bit slow as it is still the fasting month of Ramadan, when the massage parlors will be closed and there will be less girls available for sex, especially during daylight hours. Ramadan ends with a big "Eid" celebration/feast day on 24 October, then the MPs will open up again and the scene will be back to normal.

- Remus discussed the issue of AIDS. The number of AIDS cases in Indonesia is very low, most likely because of under-reporting, but is growing fairly quickly. IMHO a monger would have to be nuts to have unprotected vaginal sex or anal sex with any commercial sex worker, both in Indonesia and in every other country in the world.

- regarding "the availability of quality, proper sized condoms," I had to smile as "proper sized" depends on the gentleman in question, of course. But generally speaking, the condoms on sale here are for the average-sized Indonesian male and may be too small for a well-endowed Caucasian or African male.

At the risk of getting people mad at me, USAID and other foreign donors in the past have distributed condoms in three sizes: size 3 (smallest) for Asian countries, size 2 (medium) for Latin American countries and size 1 (largest) for Sub-Saharan Africa.

- Remus does make an excellent point that you can use in your research - the health behavior of girls working in the mid-level and upper-level brothels versus the girls working in the lower end. Another angle would be to compare the girls' ages and their use of condoms.

Where do you do your mongering? Most Indonesian girls are unshaven! Go to the kota joints, not one girl out of ten there has a shaven pussy.

Anyway, here is phrase that leaves no doubt as to what you're looking for : "saya mau cewek yang memeknya tidak dicukur, mau yang masih ada bulu"

Additional pointers
 

Apart from Hotels/Rates, itinerary, what-you-see, is-what-you-get, etc., etc., perhaps this additional information that I offer may have appeared here before (and if so, Admin please remove my post in order to prevent repetitiveness at your excellent site – thank you.)

For those mongers who both experienced or new to the Indonesian scene, what I would like to share with you are a few pointers that you might consider useful during your fantasy trips to Indonesia.

1. Regarding SECURITY.

If you can avoid it please do not take rides on “ojeks” (term used there for their motorcycle public mode of transport.) You are left at the whim and fancies of the motor rider. There have been many a story of visitors being waylaid by these “ojeks” who literally take the unknowing visitor for a ride which could even mean being robbed.

Unless you already have made prearrival arrangements and if you are being hassled at the arrival port by taxi drivers, know-all guides, hotel marketers, etc., do not engage yourself in any conversation with them, do not show that you are being agitated and do not give the appearance that you are trying to understand what is being said. Any one of these responses is what they are seeking for. Instead, politely and in a determined voice tell them that “Dodi Bocor” is meeting you and make your way out. (read notes below regarding “Dodi Bocor”.)

When about and around town, avoid eye to eye contact unless it is absolutely necessary. It will not start a fight. It will encourage the local to start his con game.

Never leave anything precious behind in your hotel room if you go out even for a short meal. Precious would include your cellphone, camera, eye shades, cigarette lighter, electric toothbrush, etc., Tough deal living in these lower star rated hotels.
Hide these items under the bed mattress or any other “safer” area in the hotel room.

2. Regarding living outside a Hotel

For those who may be fortunate and accept accommodation invites at the home an already known Indonesian friend or a new Indonesian acquaintance, please make sure that your intent to reside in the house is reported to the Police. There is a small fee that has to be paid (25K Rupiah) for the permit. It is one permit for duration of residence.

If one is caught living outside a Hotel and without this Police permit, one could find oneself in the most mind boggling situation as trumped up accusations by the Police could lead to being jailed and having to pay 15KK yes million Rupiah to get back home.

There is also a requirement that after receiving the Police permit one has to make a photocopy of this permit and it is to be given to the person in charge of the residents in the housing estate. He is called Pak R.T.

3. Moving around town and sight-seeing trips

Be very aware of what you are carrying on yourself. Remember this and remember it always : You are always being watched.

I have saved myself many times by using this ruse when I walk in their towns. Every now and then, I made a U-turn and head back as though I missed out seeing something. This way you will be able to either notice that you are being followed or throw the stalker off his tracks. Sometimes, I cross the road to walk on the other side of the street.

Different strokes for different folks – as I did not imagine that even in Central Jakarta I would meet unfriendly and cold stares from the locals when I walked alongside with my East Javanese girl. If that would not straighten up my back, it was even more incredulous with the kind of head turns and looks that we received while snacking at the Coffee House at Ibis Hotel in West Jakarta. Not that she is a ravishing beauty and I a Brad Pit.

Be more careful about using overhead bridges at dusk. Snatch thieves work in a band and there is nothing that one can do if being apprehended while being at the center of the overhead bridge.

4. Is there anything brighter?

While items 1 to 3 might sound dour, is there anything bright to add?

Yes.

If you are a regular visitor or a newbie, bring along lots of small change with you. Denominations of 5K and 10K Rupiah. Handing out “upah” or money gift is something that would brighten up local faces and feelings.

One does not have to be Santa Claus. Use personal judgement and when offering the “upah” please add that it is for him to buy some cigarettes or to have coffee.

Summary

Indonesians and I mean Indonesians in general, do not know whether they are coming or going with their lives. It is a depressing condition. There are times when I believe that they are very resilient people and there are times when I think that they are simply fatalists in their mindset.

However, most of them are warm and friendly (but be on your guard too). Unless you have had the awful experience for example in arriving in places like Dumai, an East Sumatran port which became important because of CALTEX presence, most of Indonesia is still full of virgin forests, natural beauty and bounteous fulfillment if you get what I mean.

Note :

Dodi – a familiar male name in Indonesia.
Bocor – a term used by Indonesians for someone who is regarded a maverick.

You could use any other male name but add the word “Bocor” to it. Any Indonesian who hears of a name going by “…….. Bocor” would take heed and not persist.

Why Indonesian girls are uninhibited?
 

After reading this, if the reader feels that what I am about to relate is offensive, perhaps bordering on being racist, may I humbly offer my apology. But write I wish because after having traveled to several places internationally, there is this issue why the darker skin women tend to be less inhibited towards indulgence in sex.

I recall having had a conversation with a Regional Director (who is an Indian married lady) at one of the leading Semiconductor factories. She had this to say about the insatiable sex urge of the female operators. The Semiconductor factory was located in a multi racial country. She said that cases of female operators being involved in sex from all the four factories located at various locations in the country showed a prominent incidence amongst the dark skin female factory workers.

Dark skin would mean anything from brown tan to black.

Now, pitting this remark from that Regional Director against the Indonesian backdrop, I often wondered why the Indonesian girls manifested the same “virtues”.

I could even extend it to other parts of the world where there are dark skin populations but I shall keep it to the Indonesian scenario.

Over the course of my many forays around Indonesia, I notice that apart from a young girl’s rebelliousness to get out of parental control, lack of food and the oft heard excuse that jobs are hard to come by, Indonesian girls are out there, everywhere and easy.

What makes it even easier is that their culture helps along.

Most of these Indonesian girls are from the villages. It is amazing how some of these freelance girls have found themselves at locations in Indonesia which is at the other end of the Archipelago, some thousands of miles away. One reckons how brave and definitely admirable pathfinders.

Well, back to the villages. The village life is such that it is nothing out of the ordinary for young boys and girls to be seen playing stark naked. For example, this can be seen even today while the young boys and girls are rafting on a nearby river or simply having some fun in the water. They are all stark and comfortably naked. They even wave to passers-by!

They grow up seeing the dogs and cats and fowls doing it in the heat. Hence, they consider sex as nothing more profound than breathing. It is a natural consequence.

Indonesia being predominantly of Islam faith, there is the family celebration after each male child has reached the age and had the act of circumcision performed. Hence, the penile knowledge is universal amongst the entire female village-hood. Nothing amiss as it would be for those who live in the modern world where such an act would be shared in hushed whispers, even some sniggering.

Also, particularly in Java and perhaps in other areas of Indonesia, it is a common practice amongst mothers and the female elders to wean their female child in things feminine for the purpose of being a good female partner to the future wedded husband.

Such practices involve massaging the breast of the girl at puberty. It also includes wrapping a long piece of cloth around the waist of the young girl to keep her body contour in proper geometrical shape that would defy the Coke bottle. They would also encourage their female child to eat certain plant leaves that destroy body odour and the smell of decayed fish at their genitals.

I am sure that there are other reasons of which I have not yet come to know that supports the total un inhibition of Indonesian girls towards sex in all its forms. Please add to this post if there are any that is interesting and new.

Many years ago I was told over cafeteria break that the (I shall not describe the race) girls had this stupendous ability to seize the penis in their vaginal canal such that the man would be left totally limp in the penis after the girl engages this penile-defying act.

Yes, you guessed it right. At that time I thought that this grandmother’s baloney and was good material for some fairy tale sex book.

No sir, many years later, I found out that it is true.

With this Indonesian girl, no matter how rigid my penis was during the intercourse, she would clasps me with both her arms and I would notice her stiffen her thighs slightly and there she goes for about a minute in ecstacy. My penis would start to go limp right inside her vagina and it is over. I hate it when she does that before I shoot my load.

I have asked her many times how she does that. Till today she has not revealed to me what is it that she does to make my penis go sexually impotent during the act. Perhaps it is some secret that she learned from her mother.

I found a way to stop her from shooting my load before she does into that inexplicable penile defying act. During the act, I whisper to her “Jangan hisap ya, tunggu abang datang dulu” which means “Don’t suck okay, wait till I come first”.

Any benefits gained for the man during this kind of act by the girl? Unfortunately none except the pleasure in knowing that the girl was consumed in sexual fulfillment.

So, with this experience and many memorable others, I believe that it is the dark skin girls who get the most of what makes the world go round.

So here are some more to add.

1. If you do any shopping:

Haggle the price down. This would not apply if your shopping is done at Malls. Price haggling is a must or you will be fleeced to your own disadvantage.

Always count the pieces that is placed in the carrying bag that the Vendor hands over to you. Failing to do this and you could find yourself sold short and how do you go back to prove your point?

If your purchase is substantial and hence the price exceeds 1KK Rupiah, it is not considered miserly to ask for some small item as a freebie AFTER the purchase is closed.

Fruit lovers – always point to the rear end of the stack for your choice of fruits to be packed. Avoid selecting the fruits that are conveniently placed in front by the Vendor.
Again remember to count what is placed in the carrying bag.

2. Money here today, gone...

Consider your money gone forever in the event if an Indonesian friend makes a request to borrow money from you.

The word “pinjam” or borrow is used in euphemistic terms and actually means give in their local mindset.

Hence, unless you are willing to forever part with the amount requested as a loan, do not feel that you have been cheated by a local friend.

3. Nothing comes from nothing.

Remember the aforementioned words that is part of the lyrics of a song from the movie, The Sound of Music?

What appears to be overwhelming warm hospitality from the locals is not without an ulterior motive. There is a subtle catch somewhere in their invitation. Be prepared for something that is expected from you after all their sob story and pity-party is over.

4. Eating outside is...

Same problem as I experienced while living in Thailand. Indonesia too practices a two tier pricing system. The difference between Indonesia and Thailand is that the Indonesians are adept artists.

Ask for the bill at an outside eatery and the waiter arrives with his scratch pad and he wildly jots down items and prices for food consumed. Briskly totals the amount and on many occasions I found that the charge is double for the same substance consumed by their own nationals.

Even if you have an Indonesian friend with you at the same meal does not make any impact.

Solution : Best to eat out at KFC, McDonalds, A&W and other notable fastfood outlets.

5. Every face tells a story...

If this is not representative for the girls in other parts of Indonesia, I will retract having said this.

While the price of the girl may be a moot issue amongst their eager customers, consider this harsh fact.

For example, I shall take 200K Rupiah as the girl’s sex-for-hire price. The girl has to return 140K Rupiah to the pimp, another 20K tip to the Hotel Guard or “Satpam” as they are called, 5K to 10K for their return transport. Which leaves them with anywhere between 35K to 40K as being their net hard earned money.

The mathematics would vary from joint to joint and from location to location but the system holds regardless of the differences.

In some cases, even that 35K to 40K is withheld by the organization that keeps them because it the organization pays for their lodging, food and medical services.

It is only after enslaving for a couple of years that the girl gets a chance to make it back to their home. That is the time that the full accounting is done and whatever is the balance after all the expenditure is settled, that is the amount that the girl receives as her take-home pay.

So for all the humpin’ and pumpin’ and the three holes achievement, the girls get by for a mere 35K to 40K Rupiah (4 to 5 USD) with perhaps a few extras that the girl is often just too tired to ask through benumbed lack of hope).

One can earn a Masters degree in Sociology by writing a thesis about this.

6. When travelling...

You would never fail to meet Indonesians during your travel that start to get chatty with you.

Without trying to snub the uninvited chat, make yourself a man of very few words and if possible get yourself occupied with something, even sleep works.

Such chats would begin with everything about you and possibly end with everything nice about your bracelet, your wrist watch, your camcorder, your camera and even your shoes.

Before you reach your destination, you might alight finding that you were sweet talked into parting with some item as a nice fond souvenir of your travel with the Indonesian.

The Indonesians in general are brazen cadgers and are adept in relieving visitors off their possessions.

If more issues come to my reminiscing, I shall share them here with you.

Indonesia's Impasse - any Mongers concerns?
 

I am sure that most visitors to Indonesia have not failed to express their incredulity about the rampant corruption that exists in Indonesia.

Perhaps some have even had the ignominy in being victims to corrupt Immigration, Customs or Police officials when entering Indonesia or during their stay in the country.

To try to understand the impasse that stunts the economic well being of Indonesia is somewhat similar to finding the proverbial needle in a haystack.

As did this Indonesian lawyer say to me, “I am proud of my country but I am ashamed that I am an Indonesian. For this country to ever heal itself from corruption, it would mean having to drop an atom bomb to kill the entire generation of Indonesian adults but allow the children to escape death. Then start Indonesia from scratch with this generation of children.”

An inhuman comment but nonetheless it seems to be an acceptable hypothetical solution. Yet another Indonesian University graduate explained it to me as follows, “Corruption is being cultured in Indonesia.”

A historian might possibly lay the blame on the early Hindu culture that was once the mighty Majapahit empire in Indonesia. Or even lay the blame on the Dutch colonial power that ruled Indonesia through ruthless corrupt methods for over 300 years.

Regardless of where it all began and who is to bear the blame, the fact remains that “absolute power corrupts.” Hence, the horrible Hindu (power based) caste system and the brutal economic avarice of the Dutch found “continued expression” in this vast and has-been wealthy country.

Continued expression? Yes, where might is right.

As was my experience once when traveling from Pekan Baru to Bukit Tinggi on the island of Sumatra. A certain path of the journey is through a hilly remote area. There in the middle of what appears to be the most peaceful place during the journey, a road block set up by a few military officers. Our driver stopped, hurriedly ran across the road, made a payment and drove on.

One can imagine what could possibly have happened if one refused to pay this illegal tithe to the military officers?

Corruption is a systemic problem in Indonesia.

Fact: Would having to pay 20,000,000 Rupiahs to a broker in order to get your grown up child a job in the Police, Navy, Military be not considered systemic corruption?

Same fact: The parents would have to borrow that kind of money from whoever they possibly can to ensure that their adult child does become a nightmare.

Extended same fact: Once becoming an Officer, this adult has to find the means to repay the monies borrowed and spare the parents from ending their lives prematurely.

End fact: The means? Why corruption of course. Make others pay to settle the outstanding loan.

This is just the tip of the iceberg.

What is beneath the iceberg is more than two thirds of Indonesia wallowing in abject poverty.

Kudos to the founding father of Indonesian independence. Indonesians were made nationally equal.

Zeros to the ensuing leaders along with their ministers and leaders at every bureaucratic level in the country, who have revisited the Hindu power base and Dutch aggrandizement methods of might is right. These leaders have milked the country’s coffers without any conscience till this very day and thereby entrenched the discrimination between the haves
and the have-never-evers among the populace.

Advice: Not meant to scare anyone although poignant and true. If you intend to visit Indonesia for whatever purpose and you are not a person of financial means, you might wish to reconsider making that trip. Anything goes by their books if you are unfortunate and you are arrested for an offence.

Monger Advice: God forbid that any monger is caught in having illicit sex with a minor. In some parts of Indonesia, same sex is a criminal offence. In this regard, of late there has been concern about certain Provinces that gained self autonomy from the Central Government. These Provinces have been pushed by religious activists to implement Islamic rules of conduct. Mongers should check this out before becoming an unwitting sex offender at such locations.

Proof I: Consider the ongoing yo-yo farcical case against the Aussie hairstylist woman who has been arrested for smuggling drugs into Bali. The demand price has not yet been met for sure while the case becomes a Song Sung Blue, same song difference verse.

Proof II: Even the financial might of Sony (Japan) could not tolerate whatever was going on behind closed meetings with Indonesian officialdom. Sony retrenched their workers and pulled out operations from Indonesia.

There are for certain a lot more of such cases in their judicial keep-in-view file stack as the offender pines away miserably until the day some kind of settlement can be arrived at by both parties.

Excellent reports and I am sure helpful for "new starters" in Indonesia - just a detailed point, isn't it more usual to translate "come" as "keluar" rather than "datang" in the context you describe?

It's only words and words are all we have to steal their hearts away......

The word "datang" would be more apt when referring to "come" within the context of being sexually fulfilled in whichever describable manner .

As an example, "datang" points to arrival as one would have come across "Selamat Datang" or Welcome when used this way. (just kind of giggled over here when I noticed that the word "come" already exisits after "wel")

Furthermore, the Indonesians (just like their Filipino/Filipina neighbours) love to be poetic. They refer to this kind of manner of speech as "berpuisi" or being poetic. This and such other local words describe other Indonesian chat styles, such as "bercanda" or gentle pleasantries, "sandiwara" or to make aimless chat.

So, "datang" which connotes arrival or coming (to the loved one in this regard) would smell like perfume to the gifl as she is being humped.

"Keluar" points to out, to an act of movement outward. This word in a descriptive manner defines the very act itself, that is ejaculation. However, linguistically it does not convey the meaning of togetherness in such a sublime act of sex.

On a more humourous side of explanation Bulai69, let us reword to add "keluar" as see how it would finally look like. Here it goes,

"“Jangan hisap ya, tunggu abang keluar dulu” which would then mean “Don’t suck okay, wait till I am go out first”. On hearing this, the girl might mistakenly assume that you wish to go out of her chamber of tender loving vagina to do something else, just when it mattered most to her. And to which she might say dejectedly, "Ya Ampoon" or Excuse me. - LOL

Some interesting points but Bulai69 is correct; the correct word is "keluar" and I can guarantee you that the girl will not misunderstand for one second. Your basic understanding of bahasa, however, has to be lauded and it would be a good example for other fellow travellers to this region to follow. I find the ability to communicate enhances the experience. Just my POV.

Here is something more:

1. Predators

Again, something that the unwary visitor to Indonesia should be on guard.

Take for example, from shore to shore; Indonesia at its closest point to Singapore is about 45 minutes by speedboat. The claim to self importance and resourcefulness differs between the inhabitants of these two nations.

Important guy in Indonesia would declare all the names of Generals, V.I.P, Politicians, and Tycoons that he is able to contact. He might even show you photograph/s taken of him with some well known person.

Important guy in Singapore would declare all the names of people in power who personally know him.

Without you even realizing it, the Indonesian operative has sized you up before the first words are spoken. He would be making visual recognition about everything that is you from the clothing’s to the brand of cigarettes to the size of the bulge where your wallet is placed and on and on.

He is a Master in predatory skills from the local University of Life.

Unlike in places elsewhere he will not open his briefcase and spew a few hundred name cards and pictures.

No, he does not need the cumbersome brief case to make an impression.

He is armed with the gift of the gab. That is about all there is to it where his entire existence revolves.

Talk, talk and more talk till you finally submit to his offerings or you manage a way to bump him off most politely.

In another comparison, the Filipino is an unashamed braggart. So too is the Indonesian.

The difference is that the Filipino is driven by pure hot air talk which evaporates and one is none the worse for listening to the entire load of bull.

However, the Indonesia braggart is dangerous. Listening to his abilities and resourcefulness might even lead you into believing that he is second to George W. Bush to protect and to assist you.

How does one overcome the Indonesian predator?

Simple. I have used this method on a few occasions. Outwit the predator at
his own game.

Mention to the Indonesian that you had a meeting recently or scheduled to have a meeting with the Bapak Walikota (Mayor) or the Gabenur (Governor) or you were a guest of the Wakil Presiden (Vice President) at his residence in Jakarta. You could even mention that you are there also to meet up with the Ketua Angkatan Laut (Navy Chief) and that would send shudders down his spine. Primarily because Indonesia is an Archipelago of thousands of islands it is the Indonesian Navy that is the most feared armed contingent and not the Military or the Air Force.

2. Travel wisely

It is always safe to travel while sporting an ordinary average income appearance in Indonesia.

Unless professional decorum demands that you have to be seen in suit and necktie avoid bearing a wealthy appearance when arriving and while being in Indonesia.

As I have said it elsewhere here, “you are always being watched” and not said in a derogatory manner, but the blood hounds are good at what they do in Indonesia.

This is a true happening and recurrent too for rich looking en route visitors to Batam, south of Singapore.

From either Singapore or Malaysia, the en route visitor arrives at the International Ferry port and has to take a cab to reach Batam’s International Airport for the onward flight.

The cab ride to the International Airport takes about 35 minutes through Batam’s suburbs.

After journeying for some while, the cab driver decides to pull over because of suspected problems with his engine. He alights and lifts the bonnet to attend to the problem.

You hear the driver speaking agitatedly and notice that the cab driver is using his cell phone. He walks back to explain to you that the engine is now immobile and he is effusive with his apologies. Says that he has called for technical assistance.

A few more minutes later some motorcyclists pull up to the stranded cab. There is a scuffle with the cab driver and you are approached.

The driver is robbed off whatever cash is on him and you too robbed totally.

More apologies from the cab driver. Now without his cell phone he is forced to wave down the next oncoming vehicles for a good Samaritan.

You spend another few hours at the local Police Station filling out forms and answering questions.

And you know what?

It is a scam. The cab driver is in cahoots with this band of bandits who exact highway robberies particularly on visitors who are dressed wealthily. The cab driver is the bandits third eye so to speak and when the choice is made, the cab driver starts his melodrama over his cell phone and the stranded engine.

Indonesia is so vast and I am sure that this ploy is not performed only in Batam.

Solution : Travel with casual clothings. Even use sandals to make yourself look middle class.

3. Hotel information:

Except for information needed on the Visitor’s Arrival White Card and unless absolutely needed, do not reveal to anyone at the port of entry who asks you at which Hotel you intend to stay.

Here for example is a true incident which I witnessed.

On arriving at the ferry port of Pekan Baru, it was a long queue at the Immigration. Some of us passengers decided to sit it till the queue shortened.

During that moment of rest, there was this Indonesian who kept calling out to passengers. He pointed his hand to an Algerian passenger and asked him which Hotel he was going to stay.

Out came the Hotel name from the Algerian. The Indonesian man then claimed that he was the appointed mobile transport for passengers for that Hotel and wanted to know where and how many bags did the Algerian carry.

The Algerian said one big bag and pointed to where he had laid it.

The Indonesian then picked up the bag and assured the Algerian that he would first load his bag and wait till the Algerian got through the Immigration.

About half an hour later, there was a commotion and I saw the Algerian panicky and frantic. The Indonesian and his bag were no where to be found let alone the so called appointed mobile hired by the Hotel.

All that was left with him was his camcorder and a few US Dollars in his wallet.

The hapless Algerian fell for this quick witted Indonesian ploy and lost everything that he brought in his bag for his intended visit to Indonesia.

And here is another experience. In another separate incident elsewhere, a friend of mine naively allowed a porter to carry his bag to the Hotel reception nearby while he was making a small and short transaction at the Money Changer.

After checking into his Hotel room and upon opening his bag, he found items missing and it included a brand new cellphone that he had bought for his Indonesian playmate.

4. Touts selling fake items:

There was a time before President Susilo Bambang cleaned up Jakarta’s International Airport, when touts hung at every 10 feet apart selling their fake wares just as one would leave the departure hall.

Nothing new to relate about imitation branded goods being sold.

It is the manner in which these touts operate. While the seller has got you busily engaged in the attractiveness of the item and busy in a drawn out bargain session, his sidekick is out on his pick pocket stunt right beside you and without you being overtly concerned. He appears to be an innocent onlooker impressed by the ongoing conversation between the seller and the potential buyer.

These touts have moved their activities elsewhere in the city ever since they were booted out of Jakarta’s International Airport.

Hence be careful when approached by a pitiful face trying to make a penny from a sale to you. Watch who else is pressing close on your sides.

Well said indeed. It tickles them Indonesian lasses pink whenever a foreigner manages a conversation in Bahasa with them. Yes, it is a plus and it drives the relationship a notch higher.

Note: Bahasa is a pretty easy language to learn. There are many Bahasa words that have been "Indonesianised" by way of spelling the English word phonetically in an Bahasa way. However, for the sake of mongering, it would be even shortlisted vocabulary.

I do not understand what Hinduism has got to do with the kind of corription you are mentioning. Major part of India was ruled by the British. But certain pockets were ruled by the non British. Goa was ruled by the portuguese, Tranquebar was ruled by the Duch, Pondicherry and Karaikal was ruled by the French. Just go there and experience for yourself and you will find for yourself the similarities in the nature, attitude, behaviour of the non British ruled areas with Indonesia. The colonoal rulers got the native men drunk and plundered their country while they were drinking away. And till date the culture of drinking and enjoying themselves still manifests only in the non british ruled areas of India.

And as far as Sony was concerned, any other country would have banned the product in the country, for having left the country despite the kind of volumes they generate and the profit they make. In fact with a population of over 200 million, I guess , Indonesia is in the position to call the shots to sony, by telling them that either they manufacture here or they get banned. They will run and come to manufacture here and provide jobs, instead of importing from some other country.

Infortunately Indonesians are too timid and ignorant to understand their strength in the consumer market in terms of volumes.

In this particular case, I admire India, where they banned Coke in the year 1977 and finally when they came back, they came back on the terms of the country.

I guess a revolution is required in this country, to ensure that the corrupt politicians are Guilliotined. Just imagine, the Dutch built a huge infrastructue 200 years back to refill Gasoline in Batam. And, thanks to the Singapore Government, the Batam station stands as a monument with cobwebs accumulating inside the tanks and the refilling of Gasoline for the ships is being done by Singapore by atleast one third of stolen Gas from Pertamina through their executives.

I guess, its not the religion that directs the value system, but it is the sense of belonging and the emotional investment one makes in his country that will evolve a value system, just like what happened in Japan after Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings.

In Jakarta the girls will flirt and dance w/bules in the clubs, but beware of those who are watching. This girl friend of my dancing girl told me I had to leave, that my life was in danger, after earlier warning me to be careful. I did a ring check and there was evidence that a ring was worn on the wedding ring finger. I wasn't sure what she meant by "careful" until then. These girls had money, jewelry and cars. This girl told me that that the Husband of the girl I was dirty dancing with was on his way there. I took her advice, bolted and the Husband DID show with their two little kids sleeping in the back of the car that he double parked to come in and stomp me. Much like Jersey girls and Latinas like getting their guys angry and jealous, it also goes here. I've seen a few posts here and WSA talking about how the women from the island of Madura are trained throughout their lives to apply a vaginal muscle massage. This sounds like one of the truly exotic experiences to be had in the world. Given that, I noticed that there are only a few posts referencing travel to the area or receiving such a massage. (Most mention Madura girls found elsewhere). I am an expert in Costa Rica and have traveled all over E. Europe, PI, and Thailand. But I've never been to Indonesia. I wondered if anyone could enlighten me:

I have experienced the Madura massage once when I visited Surabaya earlier in the year. I caught a taxi to a place called Dolly, which is one of the most bizarre places I have ever been. Read the Surabaya thread for more information about this place, as it's not for everyone.

Anyway, I got lucky. I found an Indianesque looking girl in one shop who was initially reluctant to service a Bulai. I think this is common. After talking with her while we went through the preliminary CBJ, she mentioned that she was from Madura. I immediately asked her whether she has the special skill her home is famous for and she said yes of course. When she mounted me she gave me an interesting vibrating massage of my didi. See how they act when they're away from home, friends and family, their social circles and its control. The island and the region where the woman was born and raised is determined for who they are and how they act.

On West Java (Sunda), the Sunda-people are quite materialistic. They are more interested in money and goods than in their children's well-being (when they have them), how they are doing. My father is married to a Sunda-woman from Bandung and this is his experience and what he sees around him. Indonesians from other parts of Java have said the same thing too.

Keep in mind that when you marry an Indonesian woman, you marry her family. You may have a bit more luck when you marry some one that is well off (including the rest of her family).Keep your wallet empty and your bank statements out of site.

First of all thank you all for your awesome contributions. I am currently planning my Indonesia assault coming in a few months. I am reading the different threads and also other websites, as may of you know filtering and going thru the volumes of material can take a while.

I have a sense of where I want to go but I am wondering about the most efficient way to order travel as well as to how much time to spend in a particular spot.

BTW so that you know I am not afraid to rought it a little bit and I more than willing to explore the path less travelled, will report back with pleasure.

So the trip: I plan to spend time in Jakarta (4-5d?), Surayaba/Dolly (4d?), Tretes (2-3d), Batam (4d?), Tajung Bitam (3-4d?). My trip will last anywhere bet 3-4 weeks depending on your feedback. I would very much appreciate recs on lesser know areas with good volumes!

Malaysia Airlines just announced a big sale for flights between Jakarta and about a dozen cities, including Bangkok. Might be a better choice than Air Asia.

KLM and an early booking is still one of the most cost effective solutions. My average pricing on KLM is about 400RM return (110 USD). Last week took MAS and got hit for RM967 an unpleasant surprise but necessary due to a meeting.

Another option from KL is Emirates as they have flights which leave KL around 15:00 and for the return flight it is 22:00 from Jakarta which means an additional few hours without hassle - mind you negotiation for a late check out would be essential !!!

AAaah to be back in Jakarta writing this rather than sitting in KL in the rain and wondering how to hit the machet later on. Mind you machet in Jakarta means patiently waiting for what may be in the room later !!

concarne: Tiger would be cheapest (though would require transit in SIN), TG (Thai) would be best (and if you have 20K UA miles you can use them for an award on Thai or SQ-Singapore Airlines). Garuda is OK. Indo budget carriers have VERY spotty safety records (they just found the wreckage of the Adam Air flight off Sulawesi).

My work is going to take me to Indonesia quite a lot in 2007. I hope to speak a little with my supplier in their own language (though I'll never match their grasp of English) but I also want to enhance my mongering experiences.

I have started with 2 aids:

'Before You Know It' is a downloadable language tutor based on flash cards. 27 different languages supported. Basic version is free. Type the name into Google and you should get it.

ToggleText Kataku is a Indo/English English/Indo translator. Also free, just cut and paste your text or type it in and bingo, translation! I use it to check my own Indo composition or to check my understanding of Indo sent to me. I've checked with my Indonesian colleagues and it works even at quite a technical level.

If anybody has any other suggestions for learning Bahasa (I miss direct conversation with real people) I for one would be glad to hear them.

Sometimes Kuwait Air, sometimes Garuda, sometime Emerites and sometimes Lufthansa. It totally depends on the day. Lufthansa will hose you for having baggage over weight worst than any airline out there. Check around little Beirut acrross from Nana. Emerates and Kuwaiti air fly Indon workers back and stop in Bangkok on the way back from Jkt. I feel very safe in a plane full of young ladies with Veils on their way to be nannies for rich Arabs. They frisked me bigtime, but I'm glad.

Concarne, I've always flown Thai on that route. As Surfer says, they're the best as far as comfort and convenience go. Garuda I think is the only other airline with regularly-scheduled nonstops, but I'd avoid them. I think I got a parasite from food on one of their planes that took me 1-1/2 years to get rid of. Unless things have changed re: the internet in the last year, you should follow BuleDaddy's advice and buy from a travel agent in Bangkok, it will be much cheaper.

I strongly suggest you buy a small pocket dictionary (kamus) you can carry in your back pocket at all times. I've done so for the 20 odd years I've visited Indonesia and still often gets used. (Its a bit on the tatty side now!). Often it assists locals also and many times they (especially girls!) like to sit down and read it.

I wouldn't eat anything from an Indo street warung again (except fried tempeh), but the same goes for eating anything with greens in Bangkok. The vegtable sides in the bowls at the soup stands on the street are unwashed and often grown in nite soil and laden with all kinds of insect eggs. If you do (and I do) get the worm kill pills from a pharmacy and do a once a month dose after you come back to kill any worms you migh have growing in your guts. A Dr. at the Bumragrad told me that licking butt was a major cause of wormage and other intesinal problems. I don't lick the pooyings PERIOD, but some of my friends do and they wonder why they get dysentary and other gastrointestinal problems. I took one small bite of a green mango and got bacterial and amoebic dysentary. They dip the corn, mangos and other produce in this filthy salted water to moisten it. BEWARE!

BuleDaddy, Based on when I came down with the problem, it had to be (a) food on Garuda, or (b) ice in drinks at My Bar or karoake bar in Blok M or (c) food at Mulia Senayan. I think Garuda was the most likely candidate. I saw a physician 3 times over the course of 1-1/2 years. The last time the doctor got 3 stool samples on 3 different days, which was a good idea since the parasite only showed up in one of the 3, and we finally killed it off with a medicine that worked for that particular critter. I haven't been one to eat at street vendors in Indonesia (although I do frequently in Thailand), and after your comments I'm damn sure not going to start now.

I agree rimming is not a good idea, and would add it's not a good idea to be on the receiving end if the woman follows with oral sex. A good way to get an E. Coli infection in your wanger, I'd suspect.

If you were, say, at a buffet at a 4 star hotel in Jakarta, would you avoid the greens and the mango?

I think it's mainly down to common sense, there are risks everywhere and everything needs to be kept in perspective. I am not naive: just before Xmas a colleague of mine contracted Hepetatis A following a trip to Manilla, normally it's not serious. Now he is dead. Actually you can get vaccinated against Hep A and B, I don't know why he didn't.

Anybody reading this that's not vaccinated against Hepatitis B is an idiot. I think it's 2 shots and you're protected for a lifetime. Because Hep A usually isn't nearly as serious as Hep B and because you have to get the vaccinations periodically to stay protected, I'm not up to date on Hepatitis A. But after reading the preceding will be soon.

A popular combined vaccine, Twinrix, the one I got, is administered in three doses over a period of 6 months, normally.. i think there is also a fast track available for early travel. It unfortunately does not protect for a lifetime, for Hep A it predicts 20 years, for Hep B 15 years only. ..

Hep B is a nasty one, it can be asymptomatic and you can be carrier without knowing it. Transmission is by body fluids - semen, saliva, blood.. it's many times easier to contract than HIV. Sexual Health clinics in developed countries will often check for your level of antibodies, if you have had a vaccination before.. I've sometimes asked my doctor to check my level when I was having a blood test.

Hep A, "jaundice" follows the oral-fecal route and is highly contagious - shaking a contaminated hand can be enough to get it, but recovery is often complete and protection is a lifetime afterwards. Funny thing about it is that adults will suffer the most, young children often will not get that sick from it and be protected for their lives.

I agree with the "idiot" comment for travelers that ignore the warnings.. protection is easy, cheap and readily available.

Not entirely true.

Hep B vaccine is three shot regimen, first month, second month and 6th month; efficacy rated 90++%, good in theory for 10 yrs. In practice, if you are challenged by the virus, titre levels of your antibiodies shoot way up and protection shield is up. First shot gives somewhere in 50% range protection, 2nd shot gets you to the 90++ level and 3rd shot is for memory cells. So if you get first two shots, you are fairly well protected; just don't forget to finish up last shot.

Hep A vaccine is two shot regimen and also good for 10 yrs, then booster is recommended. Hep A vaccine is relatively new (under 10 yrs) whereas Hep B vaccine has been around since mid '80's.

In fact, as far as the UK goes, GP's will not usually adminster A or B vaccine "willy nilly" because it's quite expensive (£90.00 a shot I was told). In my experience just saying you're going on holiday, for example, is not good enough. NB once you've said that you can't "un-say" it. So it's important to "hype-up" the reasons you want it. Licking Indonesian teenage girls fannys might work, but a more persuasive rationale I've found, is to say that you are going to remote, unsanitory areas to work and your company demands it.

3 doses (shots) over 6 months - same to what you repeated. Beside that - subject of my posting was a combined vaccine as a measure of prevention against Hep B and Hep A, both - not what you refer to, separate vaccines for each of them. I've just checked the internet for the Twinrix I mentioned - 15 years against B and 20 years against A - seems to be correct. Joel - you're probably more to update than I. It's been over decade since I was involved in the vaccination programs in Asia and with more than 20 yrs experience, booster recommendations changed.

Bulai - the GP's are not giving good advice and shocked at the prices your quoted. But I would STRONGLY recommend getting both regimens. It is now required in states for newborns and also given to all newborns in Asia for over 10-15 yrs now, so that coming generations are all protected.

I agree it is silly not to get vaccinated. Beware that some people are non responders: they don't produce antibodies. What being a non responder means is unclear: maybe they're at risk, maybe they're immune in some way.

I'm some kind of non responder: I needed six shots of two different vaccines within 2 months to elicit a slight antibody production. I think it's worth it though.

One bite off the end of a green mango slice gave me bacterial and amoebic dysentery. They dip corn, ice cream scoopers and in this case the chopped up mango in still water sitting there all day to moisten it so the spices stick. Stop the vendor from doing that or reject the one he trys to sell you if he does it anyway. That will make you "dog sick".

This morning I had an appointment with my doctor. I mentioned I am going to Indonesia and Vietnam and should I get Hep A/B vac.

He said yes and gave me Twinrix. Also gave me a Thyphoid Vac and it cost me $115AUD. So it is not cheap if you get it in Australia but better safe than sorry.

Bit of a strange request here:

I'm looking for info on the jakarta club scene. My girlfriend and I tend to like alot of public activity, if you get what i mean. Cinemas, elevators, tower block stair cases, store fitting rooms and even in a bajaj have all been conquered.

I have been set a new challenge to find a club where there is darked corners and and even if caught at it, leaniency would be shown. Were in Jakarta can you get away with this? Stadium springs to mind, but I refer not to go there.

Any suggestions? any ideas of alternatives would be welcomed.

Don't take this the wrong way but if you find a Indonesian club WITHOUT dark corners you will be lucky. My experience has been that most are OK with extra activities if you dont make a scene or disturb other patrons. Try rear entry while standing or creative use of tables etc. Needless to say a large bar bill also dulls the management's concern.

Another fun area can be hotel lobbys after peak hour or their lounge areas.

I wouldn't take it the wrong. Any pointers are welcomed. I'm used to the bars around the "blok" and not really into clubs. So my knowledge is very very limited. From your experience? A few names of venues would be great, where you have had sucess, then I can check them out and weigh up our options.

I mentioned the hotel lobby and lounge area's and her eyes light up and smoke started pouring from her ears. Again the questions is. Where? Where have you been sucessful?

Sorry, I can’t give specific locations. I’m not based in Jakarta and only get there a night or two every month or so. You should be able to use the guidelines below to sort out some local options. I’ve included some of my success stories that you can either try away from Jakarta or replicate locally.

Suitable locales fall in to two broad categories: areas that are quiet/remote enough that no body is going to directly notice (even though a few may suspect what is going on) and areas that are so dark/crowded that no body sees/cares what is happening.

During the day quiet areas tend to have some separation from the main crowd of people. Try booths at Warnet cafés, changing rooms at Pasaraya/Ramayana, lanes between clothing racks, ATM booths with frosted glass. The best time is the no-mans land between regulars checking in and party goers returning (say 22. 00 to 03. 00). Most of the staff will be out the back asleep at this time anyway. You want some where with a good-sized entrance area and preferably a café/reception area on the ground floor. I lucked out when I arrived at a hotel in Jogja at about 23. 00 only to find all the staff asleep.

Of the busy ones the obvious choice is discos. They are so dark and loud that no one is going to notice what you are doing. Those that do are generally so off their face that they don’t care. Both parties need to be suitably dressed. You will find it hard if you are in a suit and she has a million layers on. As said before rear entry while standing is pretty inconspicuous. Most have chest height tables that can hide what’s going on. The two story places have staircases that are seemingly designed to hide activities underneath. Planes are over rated, with people constantly on the move, unless you want to spring for a long haul overnight flight. Multi day river/boat tours (Kalimantan and Lombok to Komodo) are also good. You will draw some attention but its good fun to piss off the tourists. Torajaland (Central Sulawesi) and the volcanoes around central Java have some great walks in secluded areas. Bandung is a nice place but the walks get too busy. Borobodur, Jogjakarta, is only suitable during off peak season – the place is bursting with local tourists during Ramadan.

Hope this has helped. If it hasn’t jump on the Jakarta Thread and some of the long-term locals will know places that meet the required criteria.

Now for the caveat: I’ve given this info in good faith but keep in mind that if you offend the wrong people you will be in DEEP shit. Definitely NO kids areas, religious ceremonies or national events/celebrations. Indonesia is a land of contradictions. They will over look or avoid almost anything that does not directly embarrass them ("My daughter is not an Ecstasy munching ***** – she’s just the world’s best paid waitress").
