    I just returned from Jakarta and on Indonesian TV there was almost nothing else than reports about the closure of Dolly. Also daily reports in the Jakarta Post. I even saw an interview with Moammar Emka (author of the "Jakarta under cover" books) on the subject. It's not just Dolly that was closed down. In the Jakarta Post there was a listing of four other locations in Central Java that were also closed down.

    From what I've been told, the local government is looking to shut down Dolly soon. Those of you who enjoy it, might want to go soon before it's gone for good.

    El Greco: you will find that Surabaya is very different from Jakarta in that respect. Apart from the relicts that were the Dolly Brothel Alley (now in the process of being shut down and in any case a rather distasteful and filthy area at the best of times) , there is hardly anything such as a "fun district". That said, for a Surabaya newby I can still recommend:

    - Hotel Majapahit / Hotel Sheraton: in walking distance to those two hotels, you will find straight brothels (Sinfoni) , Spas where you can while away for days on end, with no endings, happy endings or full service (Glamor, Cosmo, D'King and some others) , and also TP Mall as a premium spot for freelance shop attendants, Colours Bar and Our Bar for drunk Indonesian girls on their night off. The benefit of this area is that is in what can be considered the city centre, for what it's worth.

    - Hotel Java Paragon / Hotel Shangri-La: out West, some form of suburban new centre, with the Shangri-La (Coytote) bar itself as ageing overpriced hookers pickup spot, a bunch of massage parlours next to Shangri-La in a commercial complex of Darmo Park, and another couple of Spas (Delta Spa, MyPlace Spa, Ruko Golden Palace Spa) not far, a bit further West still.

    Hope this helps!

    Legalized prostitution

    Surabaya would be better off to follow the Dutch (Amsterdam) and legalize / regulate prostitution and better protect the health of the sex workers.
    In principle you are right, but over the last couple of years in a number of cities in the Netherlands Red Light areas have been closed by self-righteous mayors under various pretexts.

    Examples:

    - Amsterdam; part of the "Wallen" area has been shut down after accusations that the owners of the locations had connections with organised crime. This was proven to be false, but only after the fact;

    - Arnhem: the "Spijkerkwartier" was closed after accusations of money laundering by the owners. After closure the case was not further investigated;

    - Deventer: most of the "Bokkingshang"was closed after accusations of money laundering. Nobody was allowed to reopen the business and it is still empty after 4 years;

    - Utrecht: the famous "Zandpad" was closed after two cases of human trafficking were discovered (in approx. 200 windows). Nobody has been allowed to take over the boats and the area is still empty.

    Nobody knows where the girls went and what they are doing now to earn a living.

    Prostitution is officially legal here in the Netherlands, but many people are doing their best to undo that.

    Sorry to be off-topic for Surabaya, but I felt the need to clarify a few things.

    Regards,

    Ko

    Looking for best area to stay in Surabaya

    I"ll be spending five days in Surabaya, later this year, in order to explore the city.

    It will be my first time there before going back to the known grounds of Jakarta.

    With regard to our hobby can someone please tell me where is a convenient place / area to stay?

    I am mainly interested in day time / evening activities like spa / massage (full service) places etc.

    Mentioning nearby hotels will be also helpfull.

    Thanks

    Reporting live from Surabaya now. Just hit czar spa, top ten and desperado today.

    1. Czar spa is awesome, the place is big and classy with a good selection of local and Chinese gals.

    2. Top ten is average with a bunch of average dancers.

    3. Desperado is. Don't even bother.

    Any bros can advise any other joints like czar where they parade the girls for you to chose? Hitting them in the next few days. Will be here a week

Multiply that by "7 to 10 customers a night" and you get 42, 000 to 60, 000 customers every evening, a number which I find hard to believe from my experiences visiting Dolly. And if those numbers are anywhere near accurate, then closing down Dolly won't make the problem go away. Those 42, 000 to 60, 000 customers will still need an outlet for sex.
    Here's a link to a website that reports 1600 sex workers living and working in Dolly.

    Of course that was in 2006.

    Read the comments. Some of them were very interesting.

    Dollys was not used to be a dirty place a few years ago. It was safe and not dangerous at all as Dolly had it's own security. I used to go there every night and never had any trouble. At that time, most 'Houses' charged around 80, 000 for 1 or 1 1/2 hour. Food and Beer was cheap. A great deal. I don't know if the place has changed much. The price should have gone up a bit. Worth visiting.

    Never been to Dolly. Until about 8 years ago I spent half the year in Semarang, so I follow the Southeast Asian news. Ran across the article in previous report. Posted it as a courtesy to the guys who follow this thread.

    Just like the NGOs. This lady is a politician. Why would we believe anything she says? A few years ago Manila's mayor cracked down on the sex industry. Most of the venues are gone, but P4P is still readily available. You just find it in the bars, the clubs, the malls, or just about anywhere people hang out in certain parts of the city. It is the oldest profession. That says a lot about its durability.

    Another issue that the mayor needs to consider. Since the average wage for a lower-class under-educated Indonesian runs around 100, 000 rupiah a day, why should a young woman have a regular job if she can earn over 300, 000 rupiah a night in Dolly? The article also fails to point out that in the past, many of those women who took the 3 million rupiah would go home and then return to prostitution in a few weeks / months.

    Surabaya would be better off to follow the Dutch (Amsterdam) and legalize / regulate prostitution and better protect the health of the sex workers.
