HY is really cheap compared to places like Phuket, CM and BKK. You can get a nice hotel room for 400 baht and the best place in town is around 1,400 a night and that is for a suite. Same for the ladies, there are lots of low end brothel type places and SW who charge 500-700 baht S/T and most karaokes are in the 1,200-1,500 L/T range with the fresh ones going for 2,000 L/T.

You should bargain as the price should be around 1800 to 2300 bahts for LT. Sometimes even lower on week days. Sure, there are several bus companies and they run all day and late into the night, it's cheap, (300 Baht or less.) Shared VIP mini buses are 350 Baht if you take them directly from the main bus terminal. Whichever ground transport you choose, the trip will take 6 - 8 hours. (OK, count on 8, and bring your own snacks & chow.)

Another option: Fly "Happy Air", the new air service from Hat Yai<>Phuket. They list the flight as taking an hour, but it's really only about 45 minutes.

Reality? IMHO it's always better to fly in and out of Bangkok. I don't like Suvarnabhumi Airport, but it's usually cheaper and takes less time in the long run.

I was thinking of doing the same but came accross a "zero fare" promotion of airasia.com so I decided to fly to Phuket from Hat Yai via BKK for the cost of 7 euros.
